Accessories for the Fashionable Barbarian

Updated: Nov 4

I've been working steadily on my Yasha Nydoorin cosplay and I think I'm making good progress. The pattern of the straps on this undergarment is bonkers, but I'm calling this done.

I mean, kind of done.

It's mostly good. But not ALL done. The strap pattern is all there but it's just pinned in place right now. I need to start affixing it all together. I think that for this I'm going to use Stitch Witchery. I can't even imagine how you'd go about sewing this crazy spider web.

I have to give a TON of credit for the cosplayer named Nora Dahlberg for helping me get through this. I don't know them and have never met them, but their blog post about their build of this cosplay was an invaluable visual reference.

I have to say that sewing thin straps from pleather is tedious and frustrating. I've seen videos of people sewing pleather straps with perfectly straight, perfectly spaced stitches along the edges. I don't know what secret sorcery they use to achieve that, but I am in awe because my stiches is messy as heck. The only saving grace is that this is an undergarment and will have a semi-opaque tunic layered over it in the finished cosplay.

Along with the outfit, there are a number of fun accessories. The pentagonal loops are printed from my own 3D models. I left removable segments to allow for the rings of the spikey bits (coming soon) to be inserted easily. Those gaps shouldn't be visible in the end.

The holy symbol of the Storm Lord is a modified version of a 3D model by alienpigpen on Thingiverse. I had originally just printed and sanded the model, and then slapped some metallic paint on it. But that came out looking very much like a painted plastic toy, and I really wasn't satisfied with it. So I stripped the paint and added some texture which I think makes it more convincingly metal in appearance.

The jewels in the holy symbol will be coming soon. I had some analysis paralysis over how to tackle these, but in the end I've decided to whip up some 3D models and print them on the SLA printer. Then I should be able to make a quick mold and cast them in clear blue resin.
